George Monoux College cruised to a five-wicket win over Tower Hamlets after losing by 27 runs earlier in the day to Leyton Sixth Form in week 13 of the Essex County Board FE “Chance to Shine” tournament at UEL SportsDock.

George Monoux took an early wicket against Leyton as Yakub Qazi ran out Ummar Ibrahim for three.

But Sohaib Kayani and Hassan Ali built a 30-run partnership before Ali was dismissed for 15 from just seven deliveries.

Zain Haidrey proved to be an even better partner as he lashed out at the bowling attack and scored 27 runs off 10 balls, with one six.

Kayani retired after reaching his 25 and the next man in, Bilal Imran, was bowled by Danial Mahmood for a second-ball duck.

After Sheikh was run out for six, Kayani returned to the crease, but Haidrey was dismissed from the next ball and then Kayani was caught for 29 off the final delivery of the ninth over, ending Leyton’s innings at 105.

Abbas Kazmi was the pick of the bowlers for George Monoux, taking 2-26 in three overs of work.

Kazmi’s batting did not reach the same heights as he was bowled by Imran for a paltry three runs, while opening partner Mahmood made it to double figures, but was then dismissed for 10.

Ali bowled Hanif Khan for nought to leave George Monoux in trouble at 28-3.

But Hassan Shakeel and Sanam Ali steadied the innings with a 35-run partnership, before run outs ended George Monoux’s hopes of victory.

Shakeel was run out for 12 by Haidrey and Shakeel (12) and Qazi (3) were both run out by Sheikh as George Monoux were all out for 78 in 8.2 overs.

George Monoux bouced back in their second fixture of the day to beat a struggling Tower Hamlets side.

Kazmi proved his worth in the field as he ran out both opening batsmen, with Tahsin Chowdhury departing for nine and Iqbal Hussain for a more productive 23 off 12 balls.

Hussain’s effort proved to be the top score of the Tower Hamlets innings, though, as the rest of the order fell cheaply.

Sadik Ahmed made a decent cameo of 13 before he was dismissed by Kazmi, but he was the only batsman to score into double figures and Tower Hamlets were 82 all out.

George Monoux did not make the run chase easy for themselves early on as Mahmood was caught for a run-a-ball 11 by Chowdhury off the bowling of Ahmed.

But Ali and Khan knocked off most of the runs together as they torched the Tower Hamlets bowling.

Ali scored 21 not out with two boundaries and Khan smashed 29 from 13 balls, ending his innings with a six before retiring.

Qasim Ali came in and knocked off the remaining runs with Sanam Ali and George Monoux were winners by five wickets with three overs to spare.
