Essex assistant coach Dimi Mascarenhas felt Surrey had just about edged day one of their County Championship Division One match at Chelmsford on Tuesday.

Rory Burns (90) and Dean Elgar (75) shared a 148-run stand to help the leaders post 256-4 from 96 overs, as the defending champions worked hard in the field.

And Mascarenhas feels Wednesday morning’s session could be key if Essex are to grab the initiative.

He said: “We’re coming up against the best batting line-up in the competition, so we knew we had to bowl well. We could have got a bit of luck early on, but that’s the way the game goes. The dropped catches don’t help, but we’ll take restricting them to 2.6 an over every day of the week.

“They came here and saw a wicket they wanted to bat on. Our skipper wanted to bowl and use the early conditions of a 10.30 start to see if there was anything in it. And there was. But we couldn’t find the edge in those early stages.

“At the moment it’s fairly even, but I’d probably just like to be in Surrey’s shoes at the moment. But we can only judge the wicket after both teams have batted.

“If we take a few wickets in the morning, knock a few over, then we’re right into the tail. Who knows what can happen? Look, it’s another long day tomorrow and we’re going to have to bowl really well at the start and bat well at the finish.”
