Essex head coach Anthony McGrath admitted the first day of their County Championship match at Worcestershire was not their best, as they were dismissed for 177 and saw the hsots reach 47-0 before an early close.

England opener Alastair Cook (37) top scored for the champions, but Josh Tongue (4-45) impressed for the home attack and saw teammates Daryl Mitchell and Brett D’Oliveira survive 17 overs before bad light stopped play.

McGrath said: “Not our best day but I felt we bowled nicely at the end without much reward and we come back tomorrow and hopefully make a breakthrough early on.

“There are enough good balls in that wicket and it looks like one of those where the wickets fall in clumps.

“It seamed all day and hopefully we will get the ball in the right areas, as we have done all year, and get inroads into that Worcestershire order.

“It is a big session in the morning. If Worcestershire bat well, we will be up against it but if we bowl well, we will be right in there with a chance.”

Essex were forced into making a change to their line-up, with Varun Chopra replacing Nick Browne at the top of the order after the left-hander from South Woodford broke a finger in the nets on Thursday.

McGrath added: “Unfortunately he got hit on the glove at the end of practice. Hopefully it is not too bad and he is back playing again soon.

“As breaks go, it is a clean break which according to the medical experts, is the best sort you can have and we are hoping his healing powers are good.”
