Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa could not hide his disappointment after Essex’s latest Vitality Blast T20 defeat againt Glamorgan at Chelmsford on Friday.

Well beaten by Surrey at The Oval the night before, the hosts were dismissed for 167, with captain Ryan ten Doeschate (43) their top scorer.

And the Welsh club secured a two-wicket win off the last ball thanks to an unbeaten 60 from Chris Cooke, off just 29 balls.

Zampa took 3-17 as Essex suffered a third defeat in four games and said: “It’s hard to put into words how disappointing that was. Two defeats in two days isn’t great for momentum.

“It was a bit of everything. The batting, we lost wickets in clumps at crucial times. 170 here isn’t enough. Then with the ball we’d done well taking wickets, but we were just losing the crucial moments, just some decision-making.

“There are things we need to get right very quickly otherwise the tournament is going to crawl away from us very quickly.”

Zampa was not sure if Essex are a team short on confidence at the moment, adding: “I’ve only been here a short while so I don’t know what the guys’ characters are like. It’s one of those things, it can turn around pretty quickly as well.

“If we can get the little things right, it’s T20 cricket and you can get a bit of a roll on. But we’re going to have to sort it out pretty quickly.

“I’m not sure how much more training can do, it’s more the mental side of the game. We’ve got the skills, everyone playing at this level has got the skills, it’s decision-making and the mental side of things.

“170 on this ground, a couple of wickets in hand and a batter in, it’s a very tough ground to field on. You might think the game is closed out, and we should have done so, but it’s never over I guess.

“I’m enjoying it personally, the ball’s coming out nicely and I think I’m playing my role quite well.”

Essex have a week to prepare for their next match, as they visit Gloucestershire on Friday July 20 (5.30pm).
