British cyclist looking forward to return to scene of first Olympic success in December
A return to Lee Valley Velopark in December for the Tissot UCI Track World Cup is something which excites cycling superstar Laura Kenny.
In its relatively short history, the Stratford venue has already played host to countless memorable moments of British success at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.
And Kenny, who won double Olympic gold in 2012 and the omnium title in 2016, believes that a vocal home crowd will lead to more British medals.
“Lee Valley Velopark holds so many great memories for me, as it does for quite a few British riders,” said the 25-year-old
“Having won Olympic and world titles there in the past, there is always a great sense of anticipation over being able to compete there again, and a big part of that is the home crowd.
“A home World Cup is always special, and returning to a venue which is so steeped in history will be a fantastic experience for riders and spectators.”
The Great Britain Cycling Team has won a combined total of eight gold medals at the last two world cups held on British soil, while the team carried on their momentum from the most recent world cup series at last weekend’s UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn.
The men’s quartet won the team pursuit title for the first time since 2012, while Katie Archibald and Emily Nelson claimed women’s Madison gold with a dominant performance on Saturday evening.
There were silver medals for the women’s team pursuit and men’s team sprint squads, while Jack Carlin earned a fantastic individual sprint silver and Mark Stewart took home bronze in the men’s points race.
British cyclists will hope for more success at the Lee Valley Velopark in December, when some of the world’s best will descend on Stratford in a bid to register qualifying points for the next Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.
Tickets for the event, which runs from December 14-16 at the venue in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, are on sale from trackworldcup.co.uk.
