UEL men’s basketball squad beat Kingston to complete a South Eastern Conference Cup and League Double.

They were lead by American star BJ McGill who managed a big 27 points and was amply supported by 17 from Will Ashby and 15 from Dougie Bennett.

The game started at a frantic pace in front of a large crowd at the Kingston College Arena, with three-pointers from Bennett and Jamie Hayes.

But this was followed by some good finishing around the basket by the Kingston offence as the first quarter ended with UEL 21-16 up.

The second quarter saw substitutions being made thick and fast and Henry Utku came in to produce some strong defence.

Ashby added seven of his points during the quarter but UEL were unable to break clear and their lead was eight at the half time interval.

The start of third quarter saw McGill take charge with the opening six points and strong rebounding by CJ Simpson and Richard Lorde kept the East Londoners ahead.

Lorde put in a lay-up at the end the quarter to push the UEL lead out to a dozen points at 60-48.

And as the fourth quarter progressed, UEL managed to maintain that gap until the final two minutes when Kingston mounted a late, but futile charge.

UEL secured the cup for the first time in their history and captain Bennett said: “The UEL fans were great and I’m proud of the team. It has been a long hard season and the double was well deserved.”
