Former Dagenham & Redbridge defender Joe Widdowson is excited to return to Victoria Road in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.

Dagger will host rivals Leyton Orient tomorrow (Saturday) as they look to progress into the first round of the prestigious cup competition.

The full-back who left Daggers in the summer and joined National League rivals Leyton Orient believes the draw was fate.

“I was excited to be honest, just before the draw was announced I thought there might be a chance that we could get Dagenham, I suppose it’s just fate really having just been at Dagenham and then signing here in the summer.

“I’m excited to go back there and it’s a local derby so it should be a good cup game.”

Widdowson admitted it will be a special occasion for him to play against his former team-mates.

“Dagenham is my former club and I’ve still got a lot of good friends there and I enjoyed my time there, so it will be nice to go back there earlier than I expected to.

“Yeah, I’ve spoke a couple of them since the draw, it will be good to see them and catch up with people there.”

The 28-year-old also revealed he’s not sure what sort of reception he’ll get and also admits the decision behind leaving the Daggers.

“No idea, hopefully a good one, but we’ll have to see as obviously I’ve signed for a local rival, but when I was at Dagenham I gave everything for Dagenham so we’ll see.

“To be honest I felt like I wasn’t really wanted at Dagenham or really going to be a big part of the plans going forward and the Orient opportunity come up near the end of the off-season and I thought it was a fresh start, a new challenge and Orient were keen to sign me.”

The Forest Gate-born player says he’s been sharing his knowledge with his team-mates and has pin pointed Corey Whitely as a threat.

“I know most of their players quite well, so I’ve said to the boys about them, giving them one or two tips on what they looked to do and stuff, so hopefully that will help us prepare.

“I know Corey well, he’s a very good player and he was excellent for us last season and he’s really lively and dangerous, so he’ll be a big threat for them and we’ll have to try and do our best to stop him.”
