45-year-old discusses Grainger’s loan move to Hampton & Richmond Borough and Victor Adeboyejo’s switch to Margate

Andy Edwards has backed Leyton Orient goalkeeper Charlie Grainger to impress during his loan spell with Hampton & Richmond Borough.

The 20-year-old has endured an incredibly frustrating 12 months at Brisbane Road having initially been given chances by ex-boss Ian Hendon.

Following Edwards appointment last week, Grainger was immediately sent on loan to Borough and kept a clean sheet during Saturday’s goalless draw in the FA Trophy against Royston Town.

“Charlie hasn’t had a lot of games and he needs to play Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday and find his form,” said Orient’s new manager.

“He is an outstanding young goalkeeper, who has got the potential to challenge Alex Cisak for the shirt along with Sam Sargeant.”

Another one of O’s talented youth academy to exit the club last week on loan was forward Victor Adeboyejo.

The striker linked up with Margate, although not on a deal until the end of the season like the National League South club stated.

Adeboyejo scored on his debut during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with East Thurrock in the FA Trophy and played against another Orient loanee in Michael Clark.

Rocks won the replay 2-0 last night to give Clark the last laugh, but the main thing for O’s young teenagers is to get crucial minutes under their belt.

Edwards said: “I read Victor’s deal was until the end of the season, but it is not. It is a game by game basis because he’s still a third-year scholar.

“He was up against Michael Clark, another one of our scholars, on Saturday so he’s won that battle, but we can call him back in an instance. The young players need to play to bridge that gap when they step into the first team.”

Orient are without a fixture until December 10 when Accrington Stanley make the trip to Brisbane Road. With no FA Cup action this Saturday, Edwards has two full weeks on the training ground to work on ideas.

The 45-year-old admitted it is a positive for him and Danny Webb to have that much time with the squad.

“I’m not happy we are out of the FA Cup, but pleased we’ve got two weeks to get one or two injured players back,” said Edwards.

“We can get a couple of other lads who maybe haven’t had as much football as they’ve needed up to speed fitness wise. Hopefully it will be a productive time.”
