Current Leyton Orient squad is not good enough and the threat of second consecutive relegation is genuine now!

The O’s have had injury problems, but we can’t just assume Josh Coulson and George Elokobi returning will make everything better

If ever a week reminded Leyton Orient of how low they have sunk then it has been the past week in the National League.

Last Tuesday (November 21), the O’s picked up what seemed a creditable draw at home to Chester.

Orient played the whole of the second half with 10-men and were 2-1 down at the break, so it appeared a decent point despite the fact the Blues were in the bottom four and struggling.

Fast forward to Saturday and that same Chester team had been walloped 4-0 by O’s local rivals Dagenham & Redbridge.

On top of that, Orient had gone down 3-0 at Torquay United giving the Gulls their first win on a Saturday this season.

If that was bad enough, O’s started Daggers centre back Bondz N’Gala at Plainmoor after he made the short trip from Victoria Road to Brisbane Road on Thursday on a one-month loan.

A look at N’Gala’s career and on paper it appears Orient have made a decent addition to their underachieving squad.

But in the one-time West Ham United defender, they’ve signed someone who hasn’t got a kick at Dagenham since the start of the season.

As much as it is painful to say it, Orient right now are not even the biggest non-league club in east London and the way things are going, they might suffer another relegation if they are not careful.

Prior to this run of games where Orient faced Chester, Torquay and Solihull Moors, I said if the Brisbane Road club failed to win more than one match then they would have to prepare themselves for a battle to survive.

The way things are looking it seems the O’s might not achieve a single victory from this period despite facing three teams in the bottom four.

If Orient can’t beat sides like Chester, Torquay and Solihull, regardless of the mitigating circumstances surrounded the aforementioned matches, then they are in a relegation battle.

Right now it certainly seems that way with the east Londoners only eight points off basement club Solihull and yet nine off 14th-placed Maidenhead United.

Orient are virtually halfway through the season and despite a host of injuries, the fact they’ve won only five league games is simply unacceptable.

Drastic improvements need to be made to this squad because we have now seen it’s not good enough.
