Andrea Dossena’s last goal in English football had come in 2009, for Liverpool in a 4-1 success against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

But the Italian full-back was just as pleased to score his first goal for Leyton Orient to set them on their way to a 3-0 success over Oldham.

Dossena’s third-minute effort was added to by David Mooney’s penalty and a late Jay Simpson strike and he said: “It’s a bit different, but football is football.

“It’s a difficult win in League One, it’s a difficult league in the Championship, Premier and Champions League.

“My attitude is the same because I love to play football and I want to keep playing football for a long time.

“I enjoy it with my team-mates and supporters and we want to keep going.”

Orient recorded their first home of 2015 and only their third in the league this season to move to within two points of safety.

And Dossena, 33, is hoping they can build on it over the coming weeks as they look to climb out of the drop zone.

He added: “At the end of the day we bring home three points which is very important to us, because we play at home and need confidence.

“We are in a not good situation, but it’s a team that works hard every day in the week and we have to bring some more points at home and this is the way we have to play until the end.”

O’s visit Walsall this weekend, before welcoming Bristol City to Brisbane Road on Tuesday, but Dossena found it hard to explain why they have struggled in E10.

He said: “I don’t know. Maybe if I have the answer I can put something on the pitch. Maybe you have to ask the gaffer!

“Maybe some of us feel a lot of pressure, I don’t know, but when I come back in the dressing room at half time, we said ‘come on the supporters are with us so we have to play without fear, how we play in the training sessions.

“This is the only way because we have chances when we try and play with the ball on the floor because it’s not our kind of football to play long ball and second ball.

“We have to keep going that way and stay focused until the end because there is a long way until May.”
