Goalkeeper coach congratulates Andy Edwards side after triumph at Hornchurch
Leyton Orient’s youth team progressed to the second round of the FA Youth Cup last night with a 2-0 success at non-league Hornchurch and several members of the squad revealed their delight after the match.
Goalkeeper Sam Sargeant played his part for the O’s, keeping a clean sheet against the Urchins and doing everything that was called of him at Bridge Avenue.
The 17-year-old has appeared on the bench for the first team this year – at Exeter City on September 5 - and was among the replacements on a couple of occasions last season under previous boss Fabio Liverani.
After helping Andy Edwards side book their spot in the second round of the competition, where they will host Luton Town, the young goalkeeper revealed he is looking forward to facing the Hatters.
Sargeant said: “Great 2-0 win and performance from the boys tonight, a good result against a tough team. Bring on Luton in the next round.”
Orient’s goalkeeper coach Lee Harrison praised the O’s academy after the victory and their young custodian in particular.
The former Wycombe Wanderers favourite added: “Well done to Leyton Orient’s youth team on their 2-0 win in the FA Youth Cup and to Sam Sargeant on his clean sheet.”
Meanwhile Christian Owusu and Sam Telling, two players to complete the 90 minutes for the academy at Hornchurch, expressed their delight.
“Good win tonight, dug in well! Bring on the next round. God is great,” said Owusu.
Telling added: “Into next round of the FA Youth cup!”
Orient were without captain Michael Clark for the match as he missed out through injury, but he’ll be looking to return for the next round tie with Luton.
The O’s youth would have hoped that an impressive display against Hornchurch could catch the attention of head coach Ian Hendon ahead of the first teams FA Cup match with Staines Town at Brisbane Road on Saturday.
After scoring the opener, Victor Adeboyejo could be set for a place on the substitute’s bench this weekend.
