Ex-Crewe Alexandra manager expects tough test at the Recreation Ground, but is looking for his squad to rise to the challenge

Leyton Orient head coach Steve Davis has told his players they need to be at their best if they want to end their poor recent run of results away to Aldershot Town this weekend.

The O’s visit the Recreation Ground on Saturday ready to do battle with the National League leaders.

Orient make the trip to Hampshire with a big injury list and confidence at a low after suffering their third consecutive defeat last weekend at home to Hartlepool United.

And with the Shots in first place with 20 points from their opening 11 games, the east Londoners know they are in for a tricky fixture.

Davis said: “Aldershot will be a really hard game and we have got to perform very well to get a result there and turn around the form we are in.

“I say form, but I do think it is more results rather than the performances which is letting us down because we are actually playing okay.

“But we need to turn that into results now and we do know it will be tough on Saturday.”

A slight consolation for O’s going into the weekend is the fact that in the early days of the season, it does seem almost every team is beatable.

Gary Waddock’s Shots are top at the moment, but they went four games without a win in August – suffering two defeats as well as two draws.

Since then they’ve seen off Solihull Moors at home and claimed wins at Ebbsfleet United and Gateshead, yet also lost at the Recreation Ground to Dover Athletic.

It shows Aldershot, like every other side in the division, can blow hot and cold and at the moment Orient are definitely doing the latter.

A lengthy list of absentees has not helped the O’s cause, but the recent set of results has been worrying for all concerned.

Davis is remaining level-headed and has challenged the younger members of his squad to step up to the mark just like 18-year-old Dan Happe did last weekend at home to Hartlepool.

“I’d be panicking more if we had everybody fit and we were putting out our best team and losing,” said the former Crewe Alexandra manager.

“When we’re full strength and have the squad together again we’ll be fine, but it’s a long season and we’re going to need those young players to come in at times and perform well, so it’s up to them.

“Dan did it. I haven’t seen the others do that yet, but they’ve got to get out there, do the business and perform well.”
