Leyton Orient youth team manager Danny Webb is hoping to see some of his youngsters of the past and present thrive in first-team action this weekend, writes Jacob Ranson.

The O’s travel away to face Dagenham & Redbridge in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round at Victoria Road on Saturday (3pm) and the former first-team manager admits it’s great to see players progress.

“It’s nice for me or anyone in youth football when you see one of your players in and around the first-team whether it’s a cup or league game or whenever it happens,” he said.

“One thing about it this year is we’ve probably got a bigger squad compared to last year in a lot of ways, so the young lads have really got to prove their worth.

“If they want to get in that team they’ve got to probably overcome someone who has played a lot more league games, that’s the manager’s choice and one thing about the manager here is, he is certainly open-minded to playing the youngsters, as I was last year.”

Orient are expected to make a few changes for the match with many speculating whether a handful of the academy products like Myles Judd, Sam Sargeant, Henry Ochieng, Dan Happe, Michael Clark and Sam Dalby could be given a chance.

“I don’t know, it’s up to the manager,” added Webb.

“It would be great for me if a few were, are or continue to be involved.”

The former defender also heaped praise on one of the club’s previous academy products – Sam Ling – who will face his old club.

“I worked with him when Andy (Edwards) was in charge of the youth,” added Webb. “He was always a good young player and lovely kid.

“He’s just been called up to the England non-league team which is great for him and I obviously get regular updates through his dad Martin (Ling) and by all accounts he is doing really well and I’m pleased for him.

“Under John Still he has got a manager that will certainly teach him the dos and don’ts of what to do on a football pitch and he seems to be reaping the rewards of that as he’s playing every week and scoring goals.”
