League Two club interviewed number of strong candidates, but picked the former West Ham United captain to replace Ian Hendon

Kevin Nolan’s first match in charge of Leyton Orient will be at Wycombe Wanderers this weekend and he’ll take his first training session tomorrow (Friday).

It has been speculated over the last couple of days that the former West Ham United captain would take over at Brisbane Road and the east Londoners confirmed the news this morning.

President Francesco Becchetti interviewed a number of people for the role, but explained why the 33-year-old has been given the job at the League Two club, who are currently 11th in the table.

A statement on the O’s website read: “The club are extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Nolan as the new player-manager on a two-and-a-half year deal.

“Kevin brings with him invaluable expertise and know how, with 17 years’ experience in high level football.

“A number of strong candidates were interviewed by the chairman, but Kevin’s hunger, desire and passion to succeed at Leyton Orient, coupled with his experience, were key in the decision process and the club believe they have the man to take Leyton Orient forward and improve the club’s position.

“Nolan, 33, has enjoyed a successful playing career at the top level of English football with the likes of West Ham United, Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers, amassing over 500 career appearances, and will continue to add to that in a Leyton Orient shirt as he combines playing with his first managerial role following the completion of his coaching badges.

“Kevin will take charge of first-team affairs with immediate effect, overseeing his first training session tomorrow morning ahead of leading the side for the very first time in Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two game at Wycombe Wanderers.

“Everyone at Leyton Orient would like to welcome Kevin to the Matchroom Stadium and look forward to working with him.”
