The O’s couldn’t break down their east London rivals, but importantly managed to not concede for the first time since August 28

Steve Davis was pleased to see Leyton Orient’s hard work on the training ground pay off in the FA Cup on Saturday.

The O’s managed to keep their first clean sheet in eight games and hold local rivals Dagenham & Redbridge to a goalless draw in the fourth qualifying round of the old competition.

Orient lined up in a 3-5-2 formation again – like they did at Barrow the previous weekend – and Davis said: “All we have worked on has been defending, so we are trying to get that right and build from clean sheets upwards.

“I always think we’ll get a chance, but the last five or six games I’ve also always felt we were going to concede.

“The different (personnel) changes we have made to the back four or five have been disruptive, but we need to try and build relationships at the back in training every day.”

Davis continued: “We have done a lot of work on just defending this week and it showed. We spent three days and six sessions on just defending our shape in the back five and the rest of the team.

“The good thing is there were signs it paid off in terms of us being tighter and not allowing them many chances.”

Dagenham matched up Orient by also playing five in defence and Davis admitted it wasn’t what they expected.

The Daggers have mainly fielded a 4-2-3-1 this season and earned success with them sitting sixth in the table and only five points off leaders Macclesfield Town.

“I was a little bit surprised and then we looked at the team an hour before and thought they might play a little bit different,” said Davis.

“We had a few possibilities and saw them warm up with a four (at the back) and a three, so we weren’t sure which way they were going to go.

“I had looked at their last few performances and I’m not sure if John (Still) was happy with them or not, but he went for a change like we did.

“You do have to get used to it and it is hard to make changes. That system there is a lot of handing over, so I was a bit surprised we almost matched them in terms of player for player and I thought we came out on top in a lot of positions.”
