Mile End club appoint former Dagger

Sporting Bengal United have announced former Dagenham & Redbridge defender Anwar Uddin as their new manager with immediate effect.

Uddin, 33, played for West Ham’s youth team, winning the FA Youth Cup in 1999, before becoming the first person of Bangladeshi origin to play in the Football League with Bristol Rovers.

He joined Daggers in 2004 and became their captain, going on to make 188 appearances for the Victoria Road club and helping them gain promotion to League One in the play-off final at Wembley.

And after spells with Barnet, Sutton and Eastbourne Borough he returned to West Ham as a part-time coach for their youth teams.

Uddin spent the 2014/15 season as assistant manager at Ryman League club Maldon and succeeds Mamun Chowdhury, woh stepped down yesterday after six years as manager of Sporting Bengal at Mile End Stadium.

Sporting Bengal Academy coach Imrul Gazi tweeted: “Exciting times ahead at Sporting Bengal Utd as we announce our new manager @AnwarU01. Join me in wishing him good luck.”

A club statement on Twitter added: “We would like to thank Mamun and his backroom team for all their efforts and many achievements.

“Some of Mamun’s achievements include taking Sporting to the League Cup final, amassing their highest points total and winning the UK Asian Championships.

“We wish him all the best for the future.”
