West Ham United have been rocked by the news that influential playmaker Manuel Lanzini has suffered a serious injury on international duty with Argentina.

Lanzini was preparing with his national team for the World Cup finals in Russia when he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, ruling him out of the tournament in the short-term and potentially for a considerable length of time.

A post on Argentina’s official Twitter feed said: “Manuel Lanzini suffered, in today’s morning training, the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee.”

Lanzini scored five goals in 29 appearances for West Ham last season and netted his first international goal in a 2-0 win over Italy in March.

He was looking to add to his three caps in Group D matches against Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria, but a statement on West Ham’s official website said: “The club are in contact with the medical staff at the Argentine Football Association to ascertain the full extent of the injury and will provide a further update in due course.

“Everyone at West Ham United would like to send Manuel our best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery.”
