David Moyes has warned West Ham supporters to be patient as he attempts to guide them up the Premier League table.

The Hammers climbed out of the relegation zone following last weekend’s 3-0 win at Stoke and host fellow strugglers Newcastle on Saturday.

Moyes has so far taken eight points from his seven games in charge, but many fans were unimpressed by their limp exit from the Carabao Cup at Arsenal in midweek.

However, the Scot said: “My ambition is to be at the top, it always is, but doing that is small steps. It’s a long journey.

“Quite often supporters don’t like that. We’re not necessarily a club who will spend hundreds of millions to get there in the short term.

“So we need to rely on our youth policy and trying to develop the club will get you there. It takes time.”

Despite their midweek setback there is no denying the Hammers’ improvement since Moyes replaced Slaven Bilic as manager in November.

They beat champions Chelsea and drew their league match with the Gunners before the thumping win at Stoke.

“We have big confidence now,” added Moyes.

“We go out there hoping to show our home supporters how we played at Stoke where we had a good result.

“We had a good week in the Premier League with points, so there are things we are doing right.

“I have my vision for where I’d like to to go but the small job at the moment is winning games, being hard to beat and picking up points.

“At the end of the season? It’s a very simple answer, to stay out of the bottom three.

“My own heart tells me I’d love to see us climb the table and depending on how results go we may do, so we have to plan for it.

“Up until last week it was just about getting outside the bottom three, and we are now.”

Mark Noble and Michail Antonio will miss out against Newcastle through injury but Cheikhou Kouyate returns after a hamstring problem.
