The best result of the week was undoubtedly Leyton Orient’s small ‘victory’ at the High Court as they staved off a winding-up petition, for now.

An outstanding tax bill was settled but other creditors are still waiting to be paid and a promise was made to settle all outstanding debts by June 12.

On the field, Danny Webb’s League Two strugglers had put up a brave fight against leaders Doncaster, for whom former O’s John Marquis and Mathieu Baudry netted in a 4-1 win at Brisbane Road at the weekend.

That left Orient seven points adrift of safety, with only eight matches remaining, starting at Crawley this weekend where they will face another former fans’ favourite in Dean Cox.

Neighbours West Ham United, meanwhile, are starting to look over their shoulder towards the Premier League drop zone after a 3-2 home defeat against defending champions Leicester City.

The Foxes had failed to win any of their previous 13 away matches this season, but jumped into a 2-0 lead in seven minutes at London Stadium.

Manuel Lanzini and Andre Ayew replied either side of a Jamie Vardy goal, which proved decisive as the Hammers missed late chances to salvage something heading into the international break.

Now in 12th place, Slaven Bilic’s men have a nine-point cushion over the bottom three, with a trip to Hull up next on their return.

Dagenham & Redbridge endured double disappointment on their travels in the National League this week, falling to defeats at Barrow (2-1) and Aldershot (3-1).

And that leaves John Still’s men in fourth place, with only a two-point advantage over the Shots in sixth as the race for a play-off place heats up, with only eight matches remaining and FA Trophy finalist York City visiting Victoria Road this weekend.

Hornchurch are chasing a play-off place in Ryman North and welcome Norwich United, but manager Jimmy McFarlane has no plans to improve his squad, no matter who becomes available.

Correspondents Dave Evans, George Sessions and Ned Keating share their thoughts on their clubs, as well as matters from the Essex Senior League, in our latest podcast presented by Archant’s digital specialist project manager Matt Withers.
