For a whole hour, West Ham’s 10-men showed a resilience and stubbornness that probably deserved to cling on to the three points.

But yet for Winston Reid and the rest of the defence it proved to be a bridge too far as Burnley grabbed a late equaliser.

“It almost feels like a defeat,” admitted the New Zealand international defender. “I think when you concede with five minutes to go, but it was a good ball in.”

It was, but the cross could and should have been avoided and to that point West Ham had defended so well.

“I think we knew that we had to be solid,” said the 29-year-old. “We knew that they would have a lot of possession and that they would try to get crosses in and be a threat, but I though we dealt with it as best as we could.”

The rearguard action came about because of Andy Carroll’s sending off. So what did Reid make of it?

“I think when someone gets sent off it is going to be a turning point, no matter what. It was just one of those things and we had to deal with it as a team.

“Andy has not done anything malicious out there.”

So did he think that the vociferous Burnley fans played a part in the red card, influencing the referee?

“I think when you go away from home, that is going to happen,” he said. “But for me, Andy did not mean to harm the player, it is just a bit of bad timing, but that is part of football and we live to fight another day.”

Since Reid teamed up in defence with Jose Fonte things have been going much better for the Hammers, so is he happy with the partnership?

“It is working okay,” he said. “We would have liked to have kept another clean sheet, but it didn’t quite pan out that way.”

Burnley had been sitting sixth in the table before this game, but Reid felt that both them and West Ham are in false positions.

“They have had a good start to the season, but for me personally we have better players than them and that is no disrespect to Burnley,” he said.

“We had a very poor first three games and we have had some injuries, but we have got just about all our injured players back now and you could see there are good players that can’t even get on to the bench.

“Hopefully we will do well this season. We need to start picking up some more wins so that we can get further up the table.”
