Hammers star has been playing with bone growth in left knee for past six weeks

West Ham United defender and New Zealand international Winston Reid is set to miss this summer’s Confederations Cup in Russia after undergoing surgery on a knee injury.

The 28-year-old has a bone growth in his left knee which he has suffered with for the past six weeks, but gamely played through the pain.

With only one game left in the Hammers’ season, away to Burnley on Sunday, the decision was taken for Reid to undergo surgery to give him the best possible chance for being fit for the start of pre-season.

What it does, mean, though, is that the All Whites captain will miss this summers’ World Cup warm-up event in Russia.

West Ham’s head of medical and sports science, Stijn Vandenbroucke, told the club website: “It was possible for Winston to continue playing but, at some point, the risk assessment made us decide to go ahead and operate on him.”
