Row over membership, closed premises and Green Street house

The civil war at the West Ham Supporters Club has moved on apace with an 11-page letter issued to the Executive Committee threatening to take legal action against them.

Back in May, the executive committee called a vote to dissolve the club which was passed, but up to 43 members were refused a vote as it was claimed that they were not proper members.

Paul Richman, a spokesman for the ‘Save the Supporters’ group, confirmed the letter had been sent which suggested that the executive had not even a quorum in recent meetings and therefore everything decided was unlawful.

Richman said: “An 11-page letter has been sent to the executive committee and it’s individual members outlining the legal position and advising them that their unilateral action to invalidate the majority of memberships is unlawful.

“They have also now been given the appropriate notice period required under the Civil Procedures Rules, advising them that, unless they reverse their decision within the next 28 days and acknowledge all members, the campaign group will put the matter before the courts and ask a judge to make a declaration of who is a member.”

The current Castle Street premises is closed on health and safety grounds and estimates suggest it would take around £150,000 to get it open again.

One asset they do have though is a property in nearby Green Street which has been valued at £390,000.

If the club is dissolved then that property will be sold and the proceeds would be divided among members.

Richman continued: “We are also taking the appropriate actions to protect the assets of the club, primarily the property at 566 Green Street, from being sold unlawfully and the proceeds being dissipated without the approval of all members.”

Pat Sheehan of the executive committee confirmed that they had received the letter.

“At this time we are not making any comment until we have taken legal advice,” he said.

It looks like this messy wrangle could go on and on.
