West Ham manager David Moyes has leapt to the defence of centre forward Andy Carroll as the team go into a vital Premier League showdown with Leicester City at the London Stadium tonight (Friday).

Moyes was forced to substitute the Geordie giant early in the second half during the 2-0 defeat at Watford last Sunday, but he insisted that Carroll got a bad deal at Vicarage Road.

“I was going to take him off at half time and I told him that,” said Moyes at his pre-match press conference. “I felt I was put in a position where I couldn’t afford to play with 10 men.

“But I really thought that every decision with Andy, the crowd screamed against him, so I hope when we play them at home, the fans will support him.”

Moyes admitted that he watched the Burnley game earlier in the season and felt that Carroll deserved to be sent off, but that he was picked on at Watford.

“I wrote down in the 27th minute when he got booked, I think he was scythed down by two defenders, so if that had been anyone else, they would have gone down and got the free kick, but Andy didn’t.

“Anybody who has played the game knows how it works. Are you telling me Andy Gray, Joe Jordan or Duncan Ferguson jumped without using their arms for leverage? You can only jump that way and it is probably one of my specialist subjects.”

Carroll was close to getting sent off at Watford as he battled with the Hornets’ defence, the vociferous crowd and the referee.

And Moyes feels that the player may have to change the way he plays.

“We said to Andy, you are going to have to change a bit and adapt,” said Moyes.

“But it is becoming ridiculous. There were times in that match when defenders climbed over Andy, but I heard no booing and the media said nothing, but as soon as it is Andy the complaining starts.

“At the moment, every time the ball goes up, people are saying that is a foul by Andy and it is simply not the case. If that happens and you are six feet four inches, you might as well play basketball rather than be a centre forward.”
