West Ham United will come up against their former player Andre Ayew when they take on Swansea City this afternoon at the Liberty Stadium.

The Ghanian international re-joined the Swans after leaving the club to join the Hammers in August, 2016 for £20 million, but only a year and a half later the forward returned to the Welsh club for £18 million.

Ayew signed a three-and-a-half year deal on January, 31 and has only played 85 minutes since joining in all competitions and has been deployed at left wing and central midfield by manager Carlos Carvahal.

The 28-year-old could get a start against his former club today and Moyes admits the forward was desperate to return to the club and the offer was too good to pass up.

“Andre desperately wanted to go back, ideally we wouldn’t have let a player go at this time to a rival, but Andre was desperate to go back and obviously we got a good offer which made it a decision we had to make,” teh 54-year-old Scotsman said.

“With Andre insisting he wanted to go, it was very difficult to stop it.”

The former Manchester United and Everton boss revealed he’s not sure on the reasons behind Ayew wanting to leave but admits he enjoyed working with him in their short stint together.

“I don’t know, maybe his own choice, maybe he felt as if he would get more game time there than he was here,” Moyes said.

“I have no real idea, maybe it’s for them reasons, but he wanted to go and that was it.

“I liked Andre, I actually think what had happened is when we came in, Chicarito was injured, Andre was out when we first came in and we actually found a way.

“We put Marko Arnautović centre forward, we put Michail Antonio centre forward and it actually made for different reasons, one or two drop down the pecking order a bit.

“We played Andre at Everton, Bournemouth and in the cup games, so Andre probably played, not all the games, but I would say he had a decent amount of starts for us at that time.”
