West Ham assistant manager Neil McDonald has refused to rule out hijacking Fulham’s deal for Greek striker Kostas Mitroglou.

The Cottagers were expected to clinch a £12.4million deal for the Olympiacos hitman before tonight’s transfer deadline, but after missing out on Lacina Traore to Everton, Hammers boss Sam Allardyce has been linked with a late swoop for the prolific 25-year-old.

Allardyce was too busy with transfer business to attend West Ham’s deadline day press conference, so his assistant Neil McDonald fielded the questions.

“It’s all speculation,” McDonald said on Mitroglou. “But it’s slightly different that we’re the ones hijacking deals,” he added with a smile, referring to Everton’s late move for Traore.

“We’re still looking to try and improve. I think we’ve added to the squad excellently so far this window and if we can get anyone else in it would be a bonus.”

Asked if he could rule out a move for Mitroglou, he said: “No, I wouldn’t rule out anybody.”

Mitroglou has smashed 21 goals in 23 games for club and country this season. McDonald admits the striker boasts an impressive record he but also talked up the Hammers’ current strikeforce of Andy Carroll and Carlton Cole.

He said: “He’s a goalscorer, isn’t he? But we’ve got a goalscorer just coming back from injury in Andy Carroll and we’ve got a goalscorer in Carlton Cole who has been popping them in over the last couple of months.

“So that’s really good and the competition for places is getting much better with people coming back from injury.”
