Lee Valley Lions coach George Alley believes there is a lot of catching up to do for his side after their opening weekend defeats.

The Lions fell to back to back defeats to rivals Haringey Huskies and new boys Bracknell Hornets and its now back to the drawing board for the coach.

“We haven’t had an ideal summer, but we only have ourselves to blame for not being sharp,” Alley said.

“I don’t want to blame lack of preparation, but the first time we stepped on fresh ice and full size ice all summer was a pre-season game with Streatham, then the next time was the league game against Haringey.

“In the end it’s an amateur game so we have to look after ourselves away from training as well.”

The coach believes they need to do a lot of work in training on their defensive play if they want to compete against the bigger sides in the league.

“We need to work on our defence, it was the work in our zone that sealed it against Haringey.

“Going forward we threatened Bracknell at points in the game, but off the puck from the neutral zone back we have to improve, we have to switch on as soon as we lose that puck.

“I felt there was a lot of tunnel vision and a lot of guys not looking at everything round them and just seeing where the puck was going and the guys know that.”

Alley is now hoping to make up for lost time and get his players sharp ahead of their next match against Guildford Phoenix (October 1).

“The guys understand it’s down to a lack of sharpness and we have had a broken up pre-season.

“We’re back home now, everyone needs to turn up to training or give notice if they can’t make it.

“I understand it’s an amateur sport and accept that real life gets in the way, but as long as people give notice I can prepare around it.”

The former Lions and London Raiders goalie also revealed he would like to add more players to his squad.

“I want to add to the team and create more competition for places because we can’t take two lines to games every week as it’s going to kill us.”
