London Raiders defenceman Jack Cooper admits they didn’t show up against Swindon Wildcats in the National League cup quarter-finals.

The Lee Valley-based outfit suffered a heavy 8-0 defeat in the first leg at the Link Centre on Saturday evening.

Cooper and his team-mates faced an uphill battle in the second leg at Lee Valley Ice Centre the following night and couldn’t rise to the challenge as they suffered a 6-2 defeat to make the score 14-2 on aggregate.

“It was disappointing being knocked out at the quarter finals,” the 21-year-old said.

“We played really well in the group stages but that’s hockey.”

The former Albany pupil admits it was a tough task as a defenceman as they spent most of Saturday evening in their own end.

“Playing away at Swindon is very hard on any day but Saturday we just didn’t turn up at all,” Cooper said.

“They trapped us in our zone for most of the game and being a defencemen it is hard as there is pressure constantly.

“Sunday we started the game very well and drew the first period but then we went sloppy again in the second and Swindon made us pay for that.

“We played really well in the third period but by then the game was done.”

Cooper believes they didn’t work hard enough to bag themselves a spotin the last four and lost to the better team.

“The main thing was that we just didn’t turn up,” he said.

“We didn’t work as a team or use anything that we had worked on in practice and that Sean (Easton) had set us to do.

“Swindon came out very fast and physical and they wanted it more.”

The young defenceman says they must now concentrate on the league and make sure they pick up some results against Bracknell Bees and Streatham IHC this weekend.

“Yes, now we’re out of the cup our main focus is the league and we have a huge weekend coming up where we need to take the points to push us up another spot.”

The Raiders are currently sitting fifth just behind Bracknell and will be hoping to beat them at Lee Valley on Saturday to leapfrog them in the standings.

While, they’ll want to win Sunday to give them breathing room on sixth-place Streatham.
