London Raiders defenceman Julian Smith is gutted to be missing out on playing against his former club Peterborough Phantoms this weekend.

The 30-year-old will be unavailable for Saturday’s match in Peterborough due to being at a family wedding but will return to action when his side host Milton Keynes Thunder the following night (5.30pm) at Lee Valley Ice Centre.

“Unfortunately I’m not playing in that match, I’m at a family wedding,” Smith said.

“I’m gutted to be missing that one as I was really looking forward to returning to my old club and getting back on the ice there.

“I loved playing there and it would have been nice to see some friendly faces in the crowd and amongst the players as well.”

Smith, who spent eight seasons at the Phantoms, had plenty of praise for his side’s opponents and admitted that it will be a tough test.

“It will be a tough test for the Raiders as Peterborough are the team to beat,” he said.

“They’ve got great strength and depth they’ve got people like James Ferrara and his brother on the back end.

“Those experienced combined with other experienced players who have joined from other clubs like Leigh Jamieson and they’re two imports who are on fire.

“Everyone knows it will be a tough test, but they need to go there and take away their time and play their game.”

The experienced defenceman is also hoping his side can get another result against Milton Keynes but admits they need to be more consistent this time round.

“Hopefully a similar result, but I just hope this time we’re more consistent throughout the whole game.

“Last time I think we got complacent and thought the game was won and we made it real hard work for ourselves.

“Sunday is all about getting off to a good start and shutting down their top players.”

Smith had nothing but praise for is former team-mate Tom Carlon and revealed he’ll be a danger man for Thunder.

“He is a great player and has got years of experience of playing at the top level.

“I remember when I was at Peterborough with him he was so hard to get the puck off and he has a good shot as well.

“We’ll have to wary of him, but there is not only him, they’ve also Ross Bowers and Jamie Line.”
