The Lee Valley-based club gave a good account of themselves as they battled hard with the Bees and only lost by one goal on Saturday.

“Of course it’s a tough loss to swallow but the gap is certainly getting smaller,” the 23-year-old said.

“The team played great from the first puck drop, we kept up with them and at large parts of the game we dominated them.”

The former St Edward’s student who is known for his goal scoring has failed to puck in the net in recent weeks but was happy to break his brief drought.

“It was good to get a goal and give us a lead going into the second period,” he said.

“It was nice to score against an old club of mine as well.”

18-year-old goalie Zach Grandy-Smith was handed his second start for the club and faced 38 shots with six beating him in the match.

Team-mate Pitchley praised the youngster’s performance against Bracknell and his debut against Swindon Wildcats as well.

“I think Zach has performed exceptional in the two games he’s played, and against two top teams as well.

“He’s only young so he still has a lot to learn but is on course to be a very good British goalie.”

Raiders will host rivals Invicta Dynamos in the cup on Saturday (5.30pm face-off) at Lee Valley Ice Rink before travelling to Berkshire to face Bracknell (6pm face-off) at the John Nike Leisure Centre.

“It will be another tough test this weekend,” Pitchley said.

“Ashley Jackson is back at the Dynamos and he gives them a bit of depth which they have been missing.

“With Bracknell on Sunday, we just need to have the same game plan as last weekend.

“We need to be physical and force them to make mistakes and capitalise on them.”

The former Romford junior also believes they are getting better and better as the season progresses and is confident their luck will change soon.

“Week after week we are getting better and gelling more,” he said.

“We can all see progression and it will pay off in the next few weeks when there is no longer a gap between the old EPL teams and every game is up for grabs.”
