London Raiders sprang something of a surprise at their Meet the Players event as they announced the signings of Juraj Huska and JJ McGrath.

Fans met up with members of the squad at the Noak Hill Sports Complex on Friday evening, where the news was revealed to much delight from supporters.

Both players are well known to the Raiders faithful, following previously successful spells in the gold and blue jersey.

Slovakian import Huska, who is now 35, first joined in the 2010/11 season, when the then-named Romford Raiders first appeared in the National League after dropping down from the English Premier League.

Known for his hard shot, Huska scored 108 points in 35 matches and maintained an excellent scoring rate over the next two seasons to finish with 210 goals and 170 assists in 142 appearances, making him the fifth-highest scorer in club history, before the old rink in Rom Valley Way was closed for demolition and the team relocated to Lee Valley.

Huska, who could now surpass the legendary Marc Chartier’s 474-point total for Raiders, went on to spend two seasons with Invicta Dynamos and two with Chelmsford Chieftains, adding another 416 points to his career haul in 182 league, cup and play-off appearances.

Meanwhile, former Romford junior McGrath first appeared in a Raiders jersey during the troubled EPL campaign of 2009/10 and played for four more seasons to score 94 points in 165 appearances.

A hard-hitting forward, who is not afraid to stick up for his team-mates, McGrath formed a formidable line with Grant Taylor and Tom Davis and collected 509 minutes in penalties in 158 league, cup and play-off matches.

The two new signings are a notable boost ahead of the team’s opening fixtures against Streatham and MK Thunder on the weekend of September 16-17.
