London Raiders have been rocked by the news that goalie Euan King faces several weeks out with injury.

The experienced King was hurt early in the third period of his side’s National League match at Basingstoke, when Raiders were 4-0 behind.

And after leaving the ice, captain Tom Davis took over between the pipes in the absence of regular back-up Zach Grandy-Smith, as Raiders went on to suffer a 7-1 loss.

A club statement released on Sunday morning, ahead of the team’s home match against Swindon Wildcats at Lee Valley, said: “After a visit to hospital Euan has been told he has an MCL sprain. This will see him out of hockey for a few weeks at least.

“The next few weeks Euan will rest and exercise to build his strength back up in his knee and we hope to see him back on the ice as soon as he feels fit enough to do so.

“We will support him in the recovery process and hope to see him as soon as possible.”

The loss of King is a serious blow to the team’s hopes, with 18-year-old Grandy-Smith relatively inexperienced at senior level.

The teenager appeared for the final few minutes of Raiders 11-1 win at Invicta last weekend and could well find himself in the firing line while the club search for a temporary replacement for King.

Following their match with Swindon, Raiders host Cardiff, Bracknell and Invicta on successive Saturdays, before visiting former EPL sides Bracknell and Peterborough.
