Wapping’s women came up short in their second outing of the new year at East League Premier Division rivals Canterbury.

Hungry to get back to winning ways, they were pushed back in the early stages as the home side started confidently.

Wapping struggled to string passes together and they fell behind when a mix-up in defence allowed Canterbury to break into the D for a clean strike at goal.

The pressure continued to mount as Canterbury forced a host of short corners and it was 2-0 before half time after another turnover saw the home side enter the D on the right to score.

Midfielders Aisling McKeon, Lotta Paulus and Lucy Todd tried to inspire a Wapping reply and the visitors began the second half well, with Becky Hart and captain Bee Armstrong to the fore.

Emma Evans and Jordan Mulvaney worked tirelessly, but the home defence held firm at a series of short corners as the scoreline remained unchanged.

Mulvaney, Evans and Todd shared the player of the match award for Wapping, who will hope for better as they host Cambridge University this weekend.

The seconds beat Harpenden 3-0, as Charlotte Holt struck twice and Rachel Haseloff also netted, and the thirds were 4-1 winners over Braintree, with goals from Sandy Akinbolu, Barbara Lo Giudice, Becky Harris and Holly Marven.

The fourths began well against Basildon seconds, only to fall behind in frustrating fashion, but they were quick to respond and captain Hattie Gaunt netted from a well-worked short corner to earn a 1-1 draw.

The ffiths drew 3-3 with County, as Lauren Hickford, Anna Fisher and Jenny Cook netted, and the sixth team beat East London 2-0 thanks to Marieke Van Kleef and Vicki Bennion goals.

Gigi Barbuto scored four times as the eighths beat Braintree fourths 5-1, but the sevenths lost 3-1 to Braintree seconds with a consolation from Emma Fields.

Matt Hyden and Sam Gilliatt struck as the men’s seconds beat Havering 2-0, with Hamish Forbes, Tom Rose and Brad Wherry on target as the thirds defeated Sudbury 3-1.

Will Cronin, Alex Stubbs and Fred Thompson goals led the eights to a 3-0 win over Clacton seconds, with Andy White and Ben Green netting as the tenths beat Upminster fifths 2-0.

The 11ths hit Waltham Forest fifths for six in a 6-1 win.
