Special tour to raise funds for armed service personnel

East London’s Lee Valley Hockey Centre will host the three final games of the Operation Stretcher Tour on the Olympic Park on Sunday June 4.

The tour is by the Hockey for Heroes team that every year takes on a new challenge to raise money for our armed service personnel.

This year, the final three games will be played against two East London teams and a GB Men’s Veterans team.

Operation Stretcher will commence on Friday May 26 at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, Wales and their first game will be against a Welsh XI.

The tour will see members of the Hockey for Heroes squad carry a stretcher across parts of England and Wales.

Great Britain men’s team manager Andy Halliday is an ambassador for the Hockey for heroes charity and also participating in this event and said: “I am going to be dribbling a hockey ball all the way behind the men carrying the stretcher. We are going to cover 20 miles every day and play three hockey games a day.”

The tour comprises of a squad of 26 members who will take it in turns to carry the stretcher, on which will be ex-Royal Marine Dom Hugill-Lovett, who was injured during a military training exercise and is now a paraplegic.

A total of 200 miles will be covered and 30 games of hockey will be played across the country.

Halliday added: “We are using our sport to support a great cause. Hockey For Heroes is a splinter group from Help for Heroes charity. Every year new challenges are taken on to raise money for our armed forces.

“I am actually hoping to get a few guests to come and play the first pass of the game.”

Halliday has been an ambassador for the Hockey For Heroes charity for two years now, adding: “We are raising much-needed funds for armed service personnel who need the help now more than ever.”

Hockey for Heroes has a men and women’s team that play games across the country to raise money for this charity. The tour will see volunteers walking alongside the stretcher with buckets to collect money.
