Beagles clubmate Grabarz into high jump final

Newham & Essex Beagles’ Christine Ohuruogu saw her hopes of another medal in the Olympic 400m dashed in Rio last night.

The 32-year-old from Stratford finished fifth in her semi-final in a time of 51.22secs, which was only 13th fastest and not enough to send her through to the final.

Ohuruogu, who won gold at the 2008 Games in Beijing and silver at London 2012, said: “To give these girls credit, they have been running well all year and I struggled to get into any kind of gear that could compete with them.

“I thought that the old Christine was back, but I think she only paid a fleeting visit – she is gone. I have to be really honest. I am a championship performer, but it only works when I work and I’ve got everything in my legs.

“It has been a tough year. I have had so many distractions and aggravations and it does take its toll. I have 12 years running in my legs and I can’t train as I was 10 years ago. I can’t even train as I was four years ago.

“Everything has been a bit cut and paste in training really. In my head, I knew these girls were good and I have to be realistic as to how I can match against them as they are so much younger than me.”

Former St Edward’s School pupil Ohuruogu was included in the Team GB squad, despite not competing at the trials due to illness, but was proud of her performance.

She added: “You have to try and give it the best you can. I am not too disappointed. I’m actually quite proud to still be hanging around. I’m the only one of my generation still running.

“I really have to start looking after myself now. Mentally I’m tired, physically I’m tired so I’m not sure what the future, but I know I need to shut everything down for a bit. I feel like I need a break.”

Ohuruogu is a member of the Team GB 4x400m relay squad, with heats beginning on Thursday.

Meanwhile, her Beagles’ clubmate Robbie Grabarz qualified for the men’s high jump final with a clearance of 2.29 metres and will be hoping to add to the bronze medal he won four years ago.
