Second string ease to big win over Romford rivals

East London Wyverns enjoyed a convincing 50-0 success over Romford & Gidea Park seconds in their first game under the floodlights at West Ham’s Memorial Ground on Friday.

Full-back Sean Cooper opened the scoring on four minutes, gathering a loose ball after the Romford right wing failed to collect a high kick to the corner by fly-half Alex Pearmain and going under the posts, with Jacob Williams converting.

A Romford penalty hit the crossbar, before Williams slotted a kick from in front of the points on 15 minutes and Cooper scored his second try soon after.

With the Wyverns looking to run the ball out of defence, Cooper collected the ball on his own 10-metre line and left the visitors in his wake as he ran virtually the length of the pitch to score, before Williams converted again.

Romford lost a man to a yellow card for a high tackle on 24 minutes and East London took advantage with an impressive attack by the backs putting right wing Sean Ellison under the posts.

Williams converted once more and the pair repeated the feat five minutes later when Ellison scored in the left corner and Williams converted from out wide, via a post.

A penalty was missed as half-time approached, but Wyverns began the second half as they ended the first, with full-back Cooper collecting a Romford clearance and racing towards the right corner, before the ball found its way to hooker Ben Hogan to score.

After another Williams conversion, the rest of the match was one-way traffic, but Romford held out until the 77th minute.

When the East London pack was held up short of the posts, the ball went wide to replacement Corey Griffiths on the left wing and he scored in the corner.

The conversion was missed this time, but the final word went to replacement fly-half Walter Scott who scored out wide on the right, before Williams slotted his kick to bring up the half-century.

Captain Williams said: “It was a great performance under the floodlights and a real team effort.”
