East London’s unbeaten start to the London Three Essex season came to an end with a 29-12 defeat at the hands of a well-organised Campion side on Saturday.

Forced to make four changes from the team that started at Upminster the week before, the maroon and blues also found themselves on the end of a string of penalties, one of which saw scrum-half Alex Mylchreest sin binned on 38 minutes.

The first half was largely uneventful and Campion went into the break leading 6-0 from two penalties, though they missed two more.

After 50 minutes the home side led 12-0, having slotted two more penalties, and they added a converted try just past the hour mark and then kicked another penalty on 68 minutes for a 22-0 lead.

East London then began to play the better rugby and outside centre Will Brown made a dash for the line on 70 minutes and offloaded to his brother Ed, with the flanker raising East London hopes with their first try.

Full-back Corey Griffiths added the conversion and the visitors scored again on 74 minutes when Griffiths kicked a penalty into the corner and from the resulting line-out replacement hooker Sam Ames-Reddin bundled his way over.

Griffiths missed the conversion this time, though, and Campion were then off-target with a penalty attempt with four minutes remaining.

But the home side – having claimed their first win of the season at Clacton a week earlier – scored a converted try at the death to finally end the spirited East London revival which saw them drop to fourth place in the table.

Captain and number eight Dan Bracken said: “We have an extended break until our next fixture at home to Basildon. We will work hard in training and hopefully have a few more players available.”

East London: Stephen Beattie; Chris Hodgson; Adrian Samuel; Rob Yiannakou; Matthew Schofield; Nick Parrott; Ed Brown; Dan Bracken; Alex Mylchreest; Daryl O’Brien; Andrew Ibberson; Kevin Lee; Will Brown; Joe Kelly; Corey Griffiths. Replacements: Gary Pearmain; Sam Ames-Redding; Rob Park.
