Herons can move as many as 13 points clear of third-placed club with success on Saturday

Head coach James Reyburn says Wanstead can take a huge stride towards promotion from London Three North East this season by beating East London on Saturday.

The Herons, who currently lead the table, visit the Memorial Recreation Ground this weekend to face the division’s third-placed club.

With the top two winning promotion, Wanstead enjoy an eight-point lead over East London ahead of the clash and Reyburn hopes it is even bigger by Saturday night.

“If we win this weekend, then it would be a major blow to East London and we would be well on track for promotion and have a nice cushion,” he said.

“If we don’t win, then we will just have to dust ourselves down and go again in our next match.

“East London still have to face Harlow (who are second) as well, but we don’t want to be relying on other results – we want to take care of the job ourselves.”

Wanstead head into the clash off the back of a resounding 61-14 success at home to Upminster last weekend.

Winger Tom Bean scored a hat-trick with Jordan Martin, standing in for skipper Jayke Arkell, nabbing two in the nine-try rout.

It was a 10th win in succession in the league for the Herons, but despite the large margin of success, Reyburn admits there is still room for improvement.

“It was a good win, but I’ll admit the scoreline flattered us a little and there are thing for us to work on,” he added.

“We had some players, like our captain Jayke, missing, but those who came in and stepped up did well.

“It was also good to have Anthony Fedele back playing for the firsts after almost a year and it shows the strength in depth of the squad.”
