A Billericay teenager will cap off a fantastic season with his Lakeside Hammers debut in their play-off semi-final first leg against Belle Vue Colts tonight (Friday).

Jason Edwards, 15, has been called up to the Hammers line-up just two weeks after becoming old enough to ride in the National League.

The year 10 Mayflower High School student is now looking forward to the experience and seeing how it goes.

“I just want to gain some experience and enjoy it,” said Edwards. “It’s just one of those experiences of getting used to riding at that level and seeing how it goes. If I win a race, then I win, if I lose, I lose.”

The current 250cc British junior runner-up will ride his first meeting on a 500cc machine after only practicing a few times.

A first outing on a 500cc around the Purfleet Raceway ended up with him spending a few days at Basildon Hospital, but the rider believes he is way more comfortable now.

“I have ridden it three or four times and every time I have gradually got used to it more and more,” he added.

The youngster got the chance to ride at the British Speedway Grand Prix in Cardiff as part of the SGP Academy earlier this year.

“Just the experience of riding at Cardiff alone was amazing as not many people can say that,” he added.

Edwards also got the chance to ride in the European Championships in the Czech Republic and finished 10th.

“When we went to the Europeans I didn’t have a clue how good anyone was going to be,” he said. “Some of them were really good and you just noticed different things like how good people’s bikes were and I learnt a lot from it.”

Edwards has been riding for four years, ever since trying out a speedway bike at Arena Essex after originally starting out doing motorcross.

“I’ve always wanted to do speedway, but I was never allowed as my dad wanted me to do motorcross to get all the basic motorbike skills first,” added Edwards, who revealed his idol is three-time world champion Jason Crump.

“Ever since I was little it’s been Crump, whether that was because I was little and his name was Jason I don’t know, but he’s the reason I wear orange and blue.”
