New chief curator joins Whitechapel Gallery from Sweden

PUBLISHED: 13:21 10 October 2012

A top Swedish museum and exhibition organiser has been appointed new chief curator at the Whitechapel Gallery.

Magnus af Petersens joins the organisation as the century-old gallery reaches half-a-million visitors a year.

He is to oversee a programme from January of modern and contemporary exhibitions, new artist commissions, presentations of rarely-seen public and private collections and displays from the gallery’s archive at the centre in Whitechapel High Street. It will include the first major UK survey of Irish artist Gerard Byrne and a show exploring the role of art in imagining the future.

Mr Petersens was curator at Stockholm’s Moderna Museet from 2002, where he organised large-scale exhibitions including ‘Paul McCarthy Head Shop’, ‘Art in a Dark Age’ and ‘Painting as Action’.
