The wild west theme of previous games in this hugely popular Japanese series is still very much in evidence as a group of three teenagers set out on a quest that will decide the fate of all mankind. This is mince and potatoes in role-playing form and every bogstandard cliché you can think of has

been shoehorned into the game. The story is trite, but it's worth persevering with because of the game's excellent turn-based combat system. It's a killing zone of seven interlocking hexagonal shapes and makes for some dizzyingly tactical encounters. A steady flow of puzzles, quests and rewards keep things moving along, but the story and characters are often banal cutouts of better ideas in finer games. Not a brilliant tenth anniversary tribute.
