A COLOURFUL festival celebrating Spanish food, wine and lifestyle is bringing a touch of Iberian sunshine to London's inner city East End at the weekend, writes Victoria Huntley.

TV wine buff's Olly Smith and Susy Atkins are holding wine tasting seminars as part of the two-day festival when Spitalfields goes continental with Tapas Fantasticas.

It's being held at the Truman Brewery's Ely's Yard off Brick Lane with vibrant wine and tapas stalls, offering rink from an array of London's Spanish restaurants.

The famous streets of Logroño in northern Spain are recreated and festival-goers can drift between stalls, sampling different tapas dishes and wines from the Rioja region.

The city of Logroño is at the heart of the Rioja region and famous for its wine and its streets lined with tapas bars, each specialising a different tasty treat.

Tapas Fantasticas is bringing over chefs from nine bars who are each preparing traditional 'Pincho' bite-sized tapas.

"It's going to be a grand fiesta!" boasts festival organiser Ricardo Aguiriano.

"We're bringing Spain to the East End and even the chefs are coming.

"London is a perfect place for a festival like this."

A variety of red, white and rosé wines from some of Rioja's most famous vineyards are 'on tap' for free tasting, with wines by the glass and tapas dishes on sale.

TV's Olly Smith and Susy Atkins from BBC1's Saturday Kitchen are holding wine tasting half-hour seminars, journeys through the Rioja region learning which white, rosé or red wines complement which foods.

Spanish music and even dance workshops are lined up, along with children's activities.

Tapas Fantasticas is on from noon to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29, at Ely's Yard in the Truman Brewery, Brick Lane.
