Sony has unveiled plans for the next generation of Blu-ray movie discs to be compatible with the PSP, thus making the handheld's UMD format largely irrelevant. All owners of both a PS3 and a PSP will need to do is to link both machines wirelessly and press a button. New discs will contain a specially formatted version of the film that is transferred to the handheld so you'll only have to buy one disc to easily view it on both machines. Blu-ray is already the bookies' favourite to supersede DVDs and this move further cements its position as the film format for the future.
