Floripa in Great Eastern Street

Archant

Just like the Brazilian beach bars that influence it, Floripa is all about fun.

The décor nods to that outdoors/indoors vibe, complete with exotic looking plants and tree trunk support posts, while retaining something of the Shoreditch scene, with classroom chairs and colourful artwork.

Food is served day and night and, judging by the drink selections in many a punter’s mitts, the cocktails are pretty popular too.

What this place really excels at, however, is music.

During our visit on a chilly, blustering Sunday evening jazz was on the bill and, oh my, did it lift us out of our grey moods.

Jake Telford and Jessica Lauren, part of the Jazz Meet collective, brought the house down with their buzzing set. A tribute to jazz legend Terry Callier was especially poignant and pro dancers showing off their fancy footwork was an unexpected bonus.

Onto the food, it was a bit of a mixed bag really. We had traditional chicken snack coxinha balana – churned chicken dumplings covered in breadcrumb – which were spicy and surprisingly moreish.

For mains it was roast dinner, Brazilian style. The chargrilled and slow roasted sirloin cut (picanha) was more of a hit than the half roast chicken, which was a tad too garlicky. Accompanying beets, cabbage and roast potatoes were given a Brazilian makeover with sweet spices, and were all the yummier for it.

I am a big Portuguese custard tart fan and while Floripa’s version pitched the creamy custard well, the pastry just wasn’t crispy enough for my liking.

Meals are reasonably priced, with two courses setting you back £18 and three courses costing £22.

While your tastebuds will be happy enough with a visit to Floripa, your ears are in for the real treat.

DJs, indie bands drum and bass and rock n roll are on the bill on varying nights of the week. Warm up your winter and give it a go.

Floripa is in Great Eastern Street, EC2A. Call O207 613 4228 or visit floripalondon.com
