A PASSIONATE and vibrant reggae-style musical is opening in Hackney tonight (Friday).

The tragic love story of Once On This Island is set to come to the Hackney Empire on Mare Street.

The award winning musical is infused with infectious reggae and calypso rhythms and tells the story of a peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy Creole planter.

The girls love is put to the test when she must prove to the island's mythical gods that the power of love is stronger than death.

The cast includes actress and singer Sharon D Clarke, who has starred in West End classics such as The Lion King, Chicago and We Will Rock You. She is best known for starring in Holby City and as a judge on Last Choir Standing.

The musical is based on Rosa Guy's My Love, My Love and is written by Tony-award winning authors Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. It went on to win the Oliver Award for Best New Musical following a successful West End stint.

The play is running until Sunday, August 16.

Tickets are £12.50-£19.50 and family discounts are available.
