THE world renowned Whitechapel Gallery is celebrating welcoming almost half a million visitors since its £13.5 million refit last year.

Prince William reopened the extended gallery which incorporated the former Whitechapel Library last year.

The gallery was founded in 1901 and was staged a number of firsts - Picasso's Guernica was shown their in 1939 on its only visit to Britain and staged the first shows of David Hockney and Spitalfields residents Gilbert and George in the 1970s.

The gallery's director Iwona Blazwick said: "We are thrilled with the success of the Whitechapel Gallery. This century old institution is the artists' gallery for everyone and the expansion enabled us to open all year round.
