100 firefighters tackle huge laundry blaze in Bethnal Green

A huge blaze in London’s East End during the night has taken nearly eight hours to bring under control.

Around 100 firefighters were involved in the incident at a laundry and recycle factory at Cheshire Street in Bethnal Green, alongside the Liverpool Street main-line railway, when 60 tons of stacked linen were destroyed.

The whole of the single-storey building was damaged by heavily smoke.

“We’ve been working in gruelling conditions in a warehouse full of recyclable materials,” fire-station manager Nic Myatt said.

“Our crews had to work throughout the night inside the building, but the fire was contained.”

The Brigade was called at 7pm last night and the blaze was finally under control by 2.44am today, but there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Crews came from 13 fire-stations across London—Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, Shadwell, Shoreditch, Homerton, Dowgate, Stoke Newington, Islington, Soho, Euston, Kentish Town, Walthamstow, and Brixton.
