Commuters got a bit of a surprise arriving in the City and east London when they were handed free rail tickets for the New Year.

Some 15,000 tickets were given away at Fenchurch Street, Limehouse and West Ham stations.

The ‘golden tickets’ allow a free return journey for up to four adults and up to four children each on c2c’s off-peak services in January.

“This is an early Christmas present,” said its Marketing chief Alan Bray. “We handed out a little something to help ease the January blues in the New Year.”

The company gave away tickets to 120,000 commuters during yesterday’s morning rush-hour on the Essex-Fenchurch Street service.
