Joint-manager praises character of squad at Enfield

Barking boss Glen Golby admitted he would have preferred to win by a more comfortable scoreline, after James Peagram scored in the last minute to earn a dramatic 4-3 win against Enfield last night.

The Blues visited Enfield looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season against derby rivals Barkingside at the weekend, but it was the hosts who started the better.

Enfield led 2-1 at the break, having scored either side of Peagram’s first goal of the night, but Peagram managed to score again as he brought the Blues back level.

The visitors took the lead for the first time themselves after a John Bricknell finish, but Enfield replied straight away as Lewis Francis scored from the penalty spot.

It was Peagram who would have the last word, though, as he smashed home a free-kick in the dying minutes to complete his hat-trick and move the Blues up to third in the Essex Senior League table.

“We got the result in the end and I was pleased with the attacking play and going forward I think we did very well,” said joint player-manager Golby.

“It was just defensively I thought we were poor, but we still managed to get the three points in the end.

“We conceded three sloppy goals which isn’t great, but we still created plenty of chances and Peagram could have had five or six goals himself if he took a few more of his chances.

“In the end I would have preferred the scoreline to be more comfortable, but I can’t knock the players’ character to keep fighting back.”

Victory last night made it three wins in four for the Blues, as they begin their push for promotion in excellent form, and Golby admitted he is pleased by his team’s amazing start.

“We would have preferred to win four in four at the start of the season, but you can’t win everything,” he added.

“I’m pleased because so far we’ve created loads of chances in the league and we’ve looked solid at the back apart from last night. However I’m confident that our start to the season gives us a solid foundation which we can build on.”

Barking now turn their attention to the FA Cup and a preliminary round tie with Stanway Rovers at Mayesbrook Park on Saturday.
