Student volunteers have picked up paintbrushes and revamped a Whitechapel community centre.
Eight young homeless and unemployed people from the Amber Foundation helped out at Brady Arts and Community Centre, working towards a painting and decorating accreditation.
The site in New Town’s storage area and green room were given a new lick of paint, and their music rooms soundproofed.
“All the volunteers seem to have really enjoyed the experience and we’re delighted that they have been able to achieve a qualification and give back to the community,” said Amber Foundation operations manager Sarah Johnson.
Social enterprise Volunteer It Yourself ran the project with support from the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund.
Hardware retailer Wickes’ Chadwell Heath and Canning Town branches donated tools and materials, as well as covering the cost of professional tradespeople and mentors on the ground.
