Crowds of people laid wreaths on the monument and observed a one minute silence in Altab Ali Park, Adler Street, in memory of the man, who was the victim of a racist murder in 1978 sparking significant community protests.

“Altab Ali Day is a moment where we come together as a community to remember the life and tragic death of Altab Ali which represented such an important point in the history of our borough,” the Mayor said.

“The ceremony was a moving tribute to Altab Ali and to how our borough responded as one to that terrible incident.

“Then, as now, our community stands united against racism and those who seek to divide us. People in the East End will always stand together to fight division, discrimination and bigotry.”
